What is the first thing you look at when you meet a person? Most likely, it will have something to do with their face. Perhaps, their eyes, nose or shape of their head — subtle clues you may not even know you are picking up. Can you control what you perceive? Could this influence how you feel about someone and even how you VOTE? SciFri takes a closer look.

My loved one perceives people as either "happy" or "grumpy". If they are not smiling or laughing he classes them as "grumpy". He misinterprets or is unable to interpret empathy either in words or in visual facial expression. Is this common in dementia? Is it indicative of self-preservation? Is it a sign that at some stage in the future he will be unable to recognise familiar faces? It is hard to live with & some explanation/understanding might make it easier to live with, as something as simple as a facial expression can promote a major rant & outburst of verbal abuse.
