Today, roughly one in seven people worldwide experiences this auditory sensation. So what exactly is tinnitus, and where does this persistent sound come from? The brain’s ability to adapt, learn, and modify thought and behavior is often considered a form of plasticity. Such adaptability is purposeful, but not always beneficial and tinnitus is an example of an unhelpful adaptation. What activities can a patient with tinnitus undertake to promote beneficial changes?
