Several groups, including the National Research Council and the National Science Teachers Association, are currently collaborating to revise the national K-12 science standards. In 2011, the National Research Council released a conceptual “Framework for Science Education” which identifies several cross-cutting skills and concepts that should be emphasized in science classrooms. Pay particular attention to the first section, “Science and Engineering Practices,” which describes common processes in scientific research.
