It is said that the symbol Cm was chosen for curium as “m” was
Marie Curie’s first initial. However, no other letter from Marie Curie's name could have been used in the element's symbol, since they were already designated to other elements or units: Cu is assigned to copper, Cr to chromium, and Ci is a unit of
radioactivity.
