The team at periodicvideos has created a TED-Ed Lesson for every element of the periodic table. Curium is element 96 on the periodic table and was named after Pierre and Marie Curie.
It is said that the symbol Cm was chosen for curium as “m” was Marie Curie’s first initial. However, no other letter from Marie Curie's name could have been used in the element's symbol, since they were already designated to other elements or units: Cu is assigned to copper, Cr to chromium, and Ci is a unit of radioactivity.
What do you think about naming elements after a scientist? Would it be better to name them after a city or a country?
