An Exercise in Self Compassion

Lesson created by Alexandra Panzer using TED-Ed's lesson creatorVideo from The School of Life YouTube channel

Let’s Begin…

It’s all too easy to be extremely tough on ourselves; we need – at points – to get better at self-compassion. Here is an exercise from the School of Life on how to lessen the voices of self-flagellation and learn to appreciate the role of self-care in a good and fruitful life.

Can you think of ways in which society reinforces the idea that our worth is directly proportional to our achievements?

The society rewards the people who achieve goals and success and other ones who posses more material things or expensive stuff. For society in general our worth depends in our achievements. We live in a materialistic and selfish society, we want to see it or not.

People tend to be more materialistic, especially during weddings and other social gatherings. Those who possess more material goods tend to promote this way of thinking, as they seek to demonstrate their superiority.

We don't need to look far from us. A sneak-peak to the social media and we can see all the 'coaches' tha only talk about effort and only effort. Sometimes people get to win the jackpot, an that's ok!
It's not all about the effort, and it's not all about the situation we live.

If we take a closer look over the big companies, the started with some HARD work. In some point, luck came asside then.

Our achievements drive us to achieve more and more. For example winning a contest you worked hard for, our reward would be an applause, cheering, or even your parents being proud. And the more you achieve the more people start to believe you'll for example win the next contest. This would make you gain confidence and work harder to win the next contest so you can keep up with others expectations.

If you accomplish something then people will congratulate you and if you don't they will most likely not and probably not even motivate you. And that will make you think you have to achieve things to have worth.
