Lead (II) acetate was used in the Roman Empire as a sweetener for wine. It is because of this use, many believe lead (II) acetate as a plausible explanation for the dementia of many Roman emperors, and some even consider the chronic lead poisoning to have caused the Empire’s gradual decline.
