The wife of Charles James, the element's discoverer, suggested the name promethium, after the Greek character Prometheus. It was accepted with a change to promethium in accordance with the spelling of most other metals.
Avatar for Joshua Riegler
Prometheus is the Greek Titan God of creation he is said to have created man from clay and stolen fire from Zeus and as a result suffers the punishment of his liver being fed upon by eagle/s (maybe until Hercules releases him) for eternity. With the above said. This element to my knowledge is not found highly upon earth or (during or related to) creation. Why is it named after Prometheus.
