Let’s Begin…
Ballet is typically thought of as harmonious, graceful and polished— hardly something that would trigger a riot. But at the first performance of Igor Stravinsky's “The Rite of Spring,” audience members were so outraged that they drowned out the orchestra. People hurled objects at the stage, started fights and were arrested. What caused this shocking reaction? Iseult Gillespie explains the controversy.

I think it was shocking for the audience, because they weren’t used to seeing ballet the way it was choreographed. All of it seemed very sloppy when in reality ballet is something with very precise movements.

I think people expect things to be one certain way. They don't want them to change because the labels are how they think they want things to be in their minds. I think the stereotypes for ballet are that is is boring and slow and graceful, however when this one was not, the audience was too closed minded to see that it could be more than the classic idea of ballet.

Maybe because they have never seen any performance like this one and they were so shoked about and it was not like any other ballet performence.

The rite of spring was shocking because people had not been exposed to this type of ballet style.

The Rite of Spring was new and innovative and people of the time were not open-minded about branching into new genres of dance and music. The dancing and music were so unorthodox and the audience didn't have it within to appreciate such a new take on classic art. Other events that shocked the world might lie within the Civil Rights Movement. People of the time period were not used to accepting people of other nationalities, but unlike this ballet that remains controversial, our world has become more inclusive and open-minded about new things.

Meaby people were shocked because this presentation was something new and we didn't had the open mind to new things. This talks about the entire history from all the humans as common subject.
