Let’s Begin…

As benign as it may look up close, the tiny seaweed Caulerpa taxifolia can wreak quite a bit of havoc on coastal ecosystems. This super algae is very adaptable; it also grows fast and spreads easily. Eric Noel Muñoz gives the details of this plant’s incredible invasion, shedding light on the risks of introducing invasive species into new ecosystems.

Natural plants and animals have natural controls on their geographic location and overall distribution. This is nature in balance, but invasive species can disrupt that balance. When genetically modified organisms like the aquarium strain of Caulerpa taxifolia get established and spread without any way to control it, we can see the damaging effects of genetically modified species. How can we get society to see the dangers of creating something in a laboratory that can not be easily stopped if let loose in the natural environment?
