Quest 18 – The nature of climate change

Let’s Begin…

There's a game of Tetris happening on planet Earth: all those pesky, stacking blocks represent carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas that is piling up rapidly as we burn the fossil fuels that run our world. Joss Fong outlines how this CO2 overload leads to climate change and reminds us that, unlike Tetris, we won't get an opportunity to start over and try again. After the video, continue onto other sections to learn more, interact, act and share.

Create and share a new lesson based on this one.

Additional Resources for you to Explore
Before you dive into the rest of this Quest, check out these videos to learn more about human causes of global warming, climate change, and its effects on nature and society:

Watch 1: I'm only a kid, what can I about climate change? (Global Weirding)
Watch 2: Causes and effects of climate change (Nat Geo)
Watch 3: How do we adapt to an already changing climate? (GIZ)
Watch 4: Can wildlife adapt to climate change? (TED-Ed)

LEARN + INTERACT

Learn more about climate change from Bill Nye the Science Guy or watch this video from David Attenborough. See if you can be the narrator for this cool (but silent!) animation on causes, effects and solutions for climate change - explain out loud what’s going on. (for ages 10+)

Read about the importance of the Greenland Ice sheet and try this experiment at home: How Melting Ice Causes Sea Level Rise. Learn more about Greenland's ice. (for ages 10+)

Watch this video about climate justice (for all ages). Research one of the locations in the video. Think about how and why climate change is affecting this country, and how is it different from your own country? Do you think this is fair? Design a poster about climate justice and share it with your family or on social media. For more ideas, you can take a look at this graphic or read about why climate change is considered a feminist issue. (for ages 14+)

Inspire yourself with this video about nature-based solutions from Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot. Learn how nature itself provides important solutions to climate change, like how urban trees reduce temperatures, capture carbon, and provide joy. Then, plant your own tree! You can register your tree planting with this global project from Climate Action, and see all trees that were planted on this global map! You can also learn more about how seaweed can help curb global warming. (for all ages)

Discover how we know the climate is changing. You can also learn what trees can tell us about the past climate. (for all ages)

ACT + SHARE

Explore the past: Talk to your parents, grandparents, older relatives, or neighbors. Ask them what the climate was like when they were your age: What were the seasons like? Were they the same, hotter or cooler, drier or wetter? Were there more or less extreme weather events, like storms or floods? Here are some more questions you can ask (for ages 10+). See if you can find evidence for what they have said. Can you find data that talks about climatic changes and confirm what they remember? Go to Show Your Stripes to see changes to average temperature in different areas of the world in the last 100-120 years. Then, create a drawing, painting or lego model to show your local stripes. (for all ages)

Think about the present: What impacts of climate change can you see around you and how does this affect your daily life? What has happened to cause this? Refer back to your environmental footprint calculation from Quest 5 (for ages 10+) and make a plan with your family of what you could do differently at home. For example, try calculating the carbon footprint of different things you eat or drink (for all ages)

Fix climate change. Congratulations, you are now the leader of your country, or of the entire world! What actions can you take now to ensure we reduce climate climate change and prepare for it in the future? Take a look at this optimistic video from Global Optimism for some inspiration! (for all ages), and here are 25 ideas of where to start. (for ages 13+)

Look into the future. Imagine yourself in the future, you are now as old as your parents or grandparents. Write yourself a postcard from future-you! Describe to present-day-you what the climate is like and how it ended up the way it is. (for all ages)

Create your own sustainable world in MineCraft with this activity from Climate Action. Try the Lumen City Challenge and the Lumen Power Challenge (includes links to download from MineCraft education, free until June 2020). (for all ages)

WANT MORE?

Think: What decisions you and your family can make to prepare for potential impacts of climate change. For example, is your home ready for a potential heatwave, flood, or drought? (for ages 10+)

Watch: 100 solutions to reverse climate change. (for ages 12+)

Read: Birds facing extreme weather events. (for all ages)

Somebody could think that a kid is not able to stop climate change or at least, do something to decrease the consequences of climate change. The only thing that they cannot deny is that strength comes from anywhere in the world.
Kids are capable of whatever they want to just if they take the decision. That is why kids need to be involved in climate change because they can make like a multiplier effect at home, schools, communities also. By little things such as talking about it when having dinner maybe or recycling plastic containers or bottles, they are reducing and even stop climate change. Going further, they might experiment on how to reduce carbon dioxide gases or investigating more renewable resources, of course, each kid should find its own way of helping and sustaining our planet or likely sharing eco-ideas at the places they consider opportune.

Kids are the future of the world, even if each and every kid starts doing their bit for safeguarding the planet, it would slowly have an huge global impact. Not every kid is aware of these things, maybe because their parents\teachers think that their children are too young to make an impact, or maybe they don't think that protecting the climate is a responsibility of every individual. So, kids who know about these issues should teach their friends as well, the parents should also teach the students about these alarming issues. At school they should urge the principal to have solar panels installed.Or something else to save the environment.Even if every kid in the world plants just one tree, that would have a massive global impact on a whole.Saving electricity is the easiest thing they can do, saving water urging others to do the same.
Moreover, parents should start teaching their students at home so that even they could invent something or discover something to save the world.

I could bring innovative ideas to the table and suggest different activities for young kids and teenagers to join in, such as tree planting day and RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Week. I could also spread information to people who aren't aware of our climate's current situation. The younger generation portrays a huge role in the future of our society. We aren't only curtailed on the guidance of our elders, rather, we could contribute significant actions and ideas that can benefit our planet as a whole. If we all work together, we could make our planet a better place together.

Kids will have a powerful influence on world dynamics when they grow up, in the meantime they can learn a lot and question the adults around them about all the new events that are happening around them. Also they can ask their schools to provide more information on climate change and to start implementing programs to encourage youth activism.

We can do our best to learn about climate change and make our footprints on the world a little more sustainable. Education is key. You can do all the contributions yourself but you are just one person. If you teach others and your community then they can help to teach others and make a contribution\on.

They could also make efforts to reduce their carbon footprints, I for instance plan to continue walking home from school if ever able, and to walk or ride a bike around my future college campus. I also hope to explore alternative methods of consumption and making the effort to consume less waste.
