A Close Video Reading of the Common Core: ELA

Lesson created by Kevin Hodgson using

Video from TeachingChannel YouTube Channel

Let’s Begin…

This flipped classroom project is designed to give you an overview of the ELA standards of the Common Core using a video from The Teaching Channel. Your task is to conduct a "close reading" of the video just as you would with a piece of reading. Pay attention to the ways information is presented, the producer's stance, strategies for explanation, the selection of interviewees, and more.

Create and share a new lesson based on this one.

Additional Resources for you to Explore
As you begin to gather materials and learn more about the Common Core, it is important that you keep an open mind about the sources. (View background information about The Teaching Channel). You may determine neutrality or not. But the same skills we are expected to teach young people (critique the source, understand the stance, find evidence to support our views) are the same skills that we should be using to analyze information about the Common Core. (For the record, I thought the video was well-done, and I like The Teaching Channel's video series, but I thought real criticism of the Common Core was missing. -- Kevin)
