Quest 17 – The nature of biodiversity loss

Let’s Begin…

What is extinction? Why does it make some animals, like dinosaurs, disappear? What happens when species are introduced into a new environment? Explore the causes of biodiversity loss, and the role humans play in recent extinctions. Begin with a story about how it only takes a few humans to change biodiversity around the world in this video by Jennifer Klos. After the video, continue onto other sections to learn more, interact, act and share.

Create and share a new lesson based on this one.

Additional Resources for you to Explore
Before you dive into the rest of this Quest, check out these videos for more information about how the balance of speciation and extinction created the biodiversity we see today. Learn how humans have increased extinction in recent times and what that means for our planet:

Humans affect nature in many ways: deforesting (by fire, logging and timbering, cutting trees for coal), extracting species for illegal trading, using wildlife as pet, circus animals and collectables; using wildlife to manufacture fashion items such as coats, hats, purses, belts, jewelry, sculptures; by using wildlife for drug testing and rituals; by poaching and trophy hunting, by polluting the environment (poisoning the rivers by mineral extraction, trowing plastic everywhere and particularly into the sea, etc.). When humans intervene the environment to access resources and to get species, even if it is done for food, shelter or medicine, these always affect the natural populations.
We can prevent future extinction by respecting nature first, by understanding its dynamics and reducing our interventions on it.

The spread of weeds is a really great point, Ann! Many times invasive plant species are introduced by accidental seed dispersal. Vehicles also destroy young trees and plants, making it easier for invasive plants to spread, especially those that can grow faster than native trees and plants. Limiting vehicle access to important ecosystems is an effective way to protect the plant communities!

You bring up a very good point, Sarmy. Many times when we interact with wild animals we cause more harm than good. One way is by feeding them. If done too much, it can unnaturally increase the number of animals, which causes an imbalance in the ecosystem.
It is important to provide wild animals with enough habitat to survive on their own. For example, it is more important to provide more forest for birds to nest and hunt for food than it would be to provide bird feeders for them.

Great point, Lucia! My line of research is called ecology, which is the study of ecosystems. Rather than study a plant or animal by itself, ecologists study the organism's role in its ecosystem. Species evolved to be the way they are because of all the other organisms in their ecosystems. The best way to understand it is to study how it fits into its environment.

That is a great point, Melony. However, there is a difference in what kind of fires are occurring in a forest. Some forests evolved to rely on small, annual fires. In fact, some seeds will only germinate if first set afire! What's called "controlled burns" are often done in these types of forests to help new generations of plants grow, and to clear out dead branches and debris.
Here is a great time-lapse video of this process https://www.frontlinewildfire.com/how-forest-recovers-wildfire/
However, if a forest has too much dead and dried debris, it is at risk of a "crown fire", which will kill most plant life. It's important to know what kind of fires your local forests are used to, and how you can prevent crown fires from destroying them! The USA state of California has great ideas on what to do https://www.readyforwildfire.org/prepare-for-wildfire/get-ready/defensible-space/

Great point, Madelyn! Did you know that pet cats are responsible for biodiversity loss? Even though pet cats can be sweet and cuddly with their owners, when they are let outside they act as ferocious predators of birds and other small animals. And when people get rid of their cats by releasing them outside, they start large colonies, which as you learned from the first video can have devastating effects on the local ecosystems.
The best thing to do is keep your cats inside and spay and neuter them so they can't make more cats if they get outside. If you want your cat to go outside, you can leash train them! I have done this with my cat, and have many friends who have done it with theirs. Here is a great article on how to properly train your kitty! https://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/29/garden/training-a-cat-to-walk-on-a-leash.html

Human beings have, over a period of time, developed various ways in which they tried to improve styles of living - this gave rise to processes like agriculture, trade etc. As population and ambition increased, nature and biodiversity started to become least important, powered by a blind, capitalistic understanding of life. Thus all human activities started to spiral out of control. This has caused a massive destruction.

To prevent future extinctions, human beings should sensitize themselves and each other about drawing a line - we must not turn into invasive species, destroying the balance of natural existence. Replacing the flaring human ego with humility will show us our place in nature's circle of life.

Poaching, hunting, and deforestation is taking away links in the ecosystem and destroying the biodiversity. As most of the poachers or construction workers are not aware of what’s going on, and are not educated, they are gradually paid to do these things to support their families at home. Humans cause biodiversity loss in many different ways. They are constantly destroying the habitats of wildlife through activities like deforestation, agriculture, mining, fishing, logging, and urban development. Humans are also causing rapid global warming, which in turn leads to biodiversity loss as many species across the planet struggle to adapt and survive in hot and increasingly acidic environments.

We can prevent future extinctions by practicing sustainability on a individual level (recycling, using environmentally-friendly products, decreasing fossil fuel use, etc.); however, we should also pressure our governments to make changes in policies to better protect biodiversity.

Humans cause biodiversity loss because we ourselves are invasive species. Even I would say we are probably the most invasive species of all the invasive species. We have completely over populated (8 billion humans on earth and growing!), we over consume in high rates, and wipe out ecosystems for our own benefit. We can prevent future extinctions by TRYING to control ourselves, especially when it comes to things we don't really need to be doing. We can also go into conservation and leave part of the world just for nature. Another, issue is deforestation, which we can ban by participating in protests. So there are a lot of ways we could fix this however, not enough of us choose the right thing over the easy thing.

Humans have caused biodiversity loss by various behaviors. Some of them include deforestation and harming the animals' habitats, hunting species to extinction, and bringing invasive species a new region. We can prevent future extinctions by creating laws to stop illegal trading and poaching. We can also use methods such as petitions, posters, flyers, and speeches to spread awareness to our community.

There should be restrictions to these actions and we rely so much from the local and national officials in the government. But basically, it should start within ourselves. We should know and must be aware that everything has its special place.

We definitely are causing biodiversity loss. As the video said, we pretty much are an invasive species. We overeat fish and other animals that have become extinct due to us hunting rare species and eating them, we multiply way to fast (nearly 8 billion at the time of writing this), and much more. We can definitely prevent future extinctions, however, by putting a stop to poaching because that surely has to be one big factor of species extinction. Shark fin soup also kinda has to stop as well, and as gelatin copies of the fin starts to come up, we can definitely see that coming soon. We really have to stop overeating, because our omega 3 pills are really ruining fish, for example, when they could be doing it more sustainably, and much mroe.

We humans cause biodiversity loss by making constructions in the forest. Constructions scare the animals, so they run away and have nowhere to hide. We can prevent future extinctions by making a petition and ask everyone you know to sign it. It's the easiest way to spread the word. :)

The main threats facing biodiversity globally are destruction, degradation, and fragmentation of habitats. reduction of individual survival and reproductive rates through exploitation, pollution, and introduction of alien species. Also, Humans affect biodiversity by their population numbers, use of land, and lifestyles, causing damage to habitats for species. ... Through proper education, and by demanding that governments make decisions to preserve biodiversity, the human population will be able to sustain life on earth longer.

we've come out on top of the food chain. we either eat too much of some animals, and others not at all. and we pollute so so much. we kill animals as game. we destroy ecosystems. sounds harsh but we are pretty much killing machine. and we are the highest limiting factor out there.

Humans cause biodiversity loss by cutting down plants and forests for agricultural, construction and other reasons (deforesting) and releasing invasive species. To prevent future extinctions, we should keep ourselves aware of which animals and plants we should take to other area (why disturb them at all?), and by trying to at least limit the amount of deforestation that we do.

We take up so much of the land animals need, we need to start finding places to build that won't harm the animals. An example of humans taking away animal habitats is the Amazon Rainforest. There are so many animals that live there and us humans took it away from them. It's unfair for the animals, they are trying to do what all humans and living organisms are trying to do: they are trying to live.

human causes deforestation, causing climate change, introducing new species to different regions around the world, causing roll-over effect on native animals and other species, upsetting the ecosystem around the area.
We can prevent this by restricting cross-boarder transport of animals and aware of the consequences of changing a slight biodiversity of an area
