Quest 6 – The nature of design

Let’s Begin…

Nature teaches us to solve problems beautifully, intelligently, and sustainably. Did you know Velcro was inspired by burrs stuck in fur? Or that engineers made spider-shaped robots? This design process is called biomimicry. To begin, let’s watch a video to learn why architect Mick Pearce designed a building inspired by a termite mound. After the video, continue onto other sections to learn more, interact, act and share.

Create and share a new lesson based on this one.

Additional Resources for you to Explore
Before you dive into the rest of this Quest, check out these great videos to learn how designers study nature to improve the ways we make stuff. It's no wonder we're so inspired by the natural world— nature has been “product testing” for billions of years!

Watch 1: What Is Biomimicry? (Fast Company)
Watch 2: 8 Useful Technologies Inspired by Nature (SciShow)
Watch 3: Science Copies Nature’s Secrets-Biomimicry (IFSVND)
Watch 4: Hidden Miracles of the Natural World: Louis Schwartzberg (TED)

LEARN + INTERACT

Test the power of nature and find the strength of an eggshell with this project from Science Sparks. (for ages 11-14)

Search for instances of biomimicry in your life. Grab a pencil and paper or download an Inventor’s Notebook from the Spark Lab. Then, make a list of the products you use each day. Can you think of something in nature that might have inspired their shape or function? (for all ages)

Draw a detailed picture of one of the most amazing things you have observed in nature (for example: a turtle’s shell, a field of flowers, a porcupine’s spine). What is distinctive about its shape? What are its key parts? How does it “work”? How is it connected to other parts of nature? (for all ages)

Read teacher John Marconi and his students’ very detailed report about green cities and think about your town. What parts of your city or town are your favorite? Least favorite? How would you improve them? Draw inspiration from nature as you design improvements. (for ages 15-18)

ACT + SHARE

Lead a discussion with your family (or online with your neighbors!). Ask everyone about a specific problem they or your community is facing. How do you think nature could solve this problem? (for all ages)

Observe nature for a few minutes and then write a poem about the form and function of something that caught your attention. Ask your parents or teacher for help sharing your poem online with #EarthSchool. (for all ages)

Write a letter to someone from your local government or to a community leader. Explain what biomimicry is, then show them a nature-based design that can improve your community. Suggest what they could do to help make this happen. Need help constructing your letter? Here’s a sample. (for all ages)

Watch a new movie on biomimicry and climate change narrated by pioneering biomimicry expert, Janice Benyus, and share the link with a friend. Feeling really ambitious? Attend her entire online course. (for ages 15-18)

WANT MORE?

Watch this video from Berkus Design Studio to learn how architects get inspired by the natural world. (for all ages)

Watch designer Neri Oxman talk about Design at the Intersection of Technology and Biology and learn about other ways to get original perspectives from biomimicry. (for ages 15-18)

Read about 7 surprising technologies inspired by nature with Live Science. (for ages 15-18)

Design an improvement for your neighborhood. Pick a problem (litter in a local park, not enough parking spaces, a run down building, for example), and use what we’ve learned about biomimicry to figure out a way to improve the issue. Before you begin, brush up on your design skills with this tool, which is used by world class designers at Stanford University. (for ages 15-18)

Create a new civilization. Lots of species live underground. Could humans?  Design an underground civilization with this project developed by educator John Spencer. (for ages 11-18)

This Earth School Quest was created by the following incredible educators and environmental experts: Richard Matthew, Steve Davis and Bill Tomlinson, University of California Irvine
We look forward to seeing your Quest in action!

Document your Quests— take photos of the experiments, activities, drawings, and writing prompts you tried— and share your journey with the Earth School team and students by using #EarthSchool. We'll feature some of your photos and stories on our social channels, hopefully encouraging others to join the cause!

Explore additional creative activities (for all ages!) from the Nature of Society and save images of your work from each Quest in Littlescribe – later you can create an original card, book, magazine or calendar to bring your adventures to life!
Watch the video and finish the Think section to complete the lesson.

Think of some part of nature that you really love. It could be the ocean. Or a forest. Sunshine or a storm. A bird. A flower. A tree. What fascinates you about this piece of nature? Can you describe its design? What might people learn by studying it? How might we use that knowledge in the human world? (for all ages)

I really love and well fascinated by cats because of their special characteristics such as having retractable claws, quick reflexes and having night vision eyes.
Its night vision eyes enable cats to see in the dark because of the high number of rods in the eye's retina which is sensitive to dim light. Its night vision characteristics inspired people to make night vision goggles, night vision cameras and more.
I haven't had any ideas myself, but I will still learn and study further about all types of cats and hope to gain knowledge from it. Some day, I hope to make a well-known and useful invention based on my inspiration of cats.

One system that fascinates me is the rock cycle. The design of this cycle is that at one point or another every rock becomes another form within the cycle. People could learn a lot of things by studying this. We can learn that most things in the natural world cycle, and without these cycles humans wouldn't be able to live the lives that we do. This knowledge can be used in the human world by applying it to the way that we are using energy sources. Many of these sources have taken thousands of years to form, much like rocks, but if we use them to quickly, they won't have time to replenish.

My favorite piece of nature is a shark because it is so interesting how they have ridges on their whole body that allows them to reduce friction and move through the water faster. This could be useful for humans to use on boats to make them quicker. For example, if you needed a boat to deliver medicine quickly, you would want it to have this feature so it could move as quick as possible.

Also, I find a mosquito very interesting the straw it uses to suck blood is so thin, that you can't feel it getting into your body. This is being used to help develop less painful injections.

Scientists may want to study kingfishers in ore detail as they dive from heights into very deep water, they also have interesting eyes and use monocular vision in the air (use only one eye at a time) but underwater use both of their eyes. This underwater vision is not as good but still allows them to see their prey well in the water as well as above/out of it. Scientist should maybe study how this transition works and how it really affects the kingfishers eyesight in more detail.

Certain communities of people have already discovered that they can create livable structures with snow (igloos, quinzhee, etc.) by packing snow. Perhaps people could learn from the crystal structure of snowflakes and the overall composition of snow to create artificial versions of snow that could be used to make well-insulated structures.

The way plants work fascinates me. It can squeeze every last drop of nutrients out of everything, from the minerals out of a cup of water to sunlight. The roots of plants are also built to constantly search for resources, just like humans would with oilsands, but in a much more complicated but efficient manner. If we could study the way the roots work and how they transform sunlight into glucose, I think we could very easily solve global hunger, as we could draw out essential minerals from water, and transform sunlight into sugar, which we could then either gather enough and somehow prepare it in a way humans could eat, or we could reduce the amount of work sugar farmers have to do, as we could meet the increasing demand in the global sugar market by using this new "plant glucose."

They represent magnificence! It's amazing how a mountain accommodates diversed living creatures and offers life essential resources. And covers an area from typhoons too!

Humans should bear in mind that all living things are interrelated in the cosmos, and that we are primary stewards of all other creations. Preserving nature gives opportunity to our future generations, who would surely contribute great nature-friendly ideas and sustainable innovations to the world.

Who knows, one of my kids might design typhoon proof bricks inspired by the magnificent mountain in the future, which a typhone-prone country like Philippines need.

Researchers from Stanford University and Wageningen University published a study after tracking the torque from wings of 12 different species of hummingbirds and found that the birds’ ratio of their wing’s length to their width determined their ability to sustain hovering power. Specifically, hummingbirds with a larger aspect ratio (3.5 to 4.0 for hummingbirds) used less power. Engineers hope to use this information in helicopter design. To my mind this invent will help military to fly faster and better.

Also, there are minerals in it and it was also believed to have restorative powers. I do hope, someday, that this can be a useful invention for mankind.

About Earth School

Today, over 1.5 billion children aren’t able to go to school.
