Quest 7 – The nature of engineering

Let’s Begin…

Engineering uses knowledge about how things work to meet peoples’ needs. By harnessing materials, data and DNA, engineers can help bring water, energy and other resources where they’re needed. Sometimes this harms the environment, so experts are urgently testing nature-friendly ways of engineering, like educator Congrui Jin in our first video. After you watch, continue onto other sections to learn more, interact, act and share.

Create and share a new lesson based on this one.

Additional Resources for you to Explore
Before you dive into the rest of this Quest, check out these videos for more information about engineering and about how you can learn to use science to help the planet:

Watch 1: What is an Engineer? (Crash Course Kids)
Watch 2: Environmental Engineering: a Crash Course for Kids (PBS)
Watch 3: Youth Inspiring a Better World (Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology)
Watch 4: Code Stars (Code.org)

LEARN + INTERACT

See real-life examples of how nature inspired engineering with these videos: How burrs inspired Velcro (PBS Kids) and how a butterfly’s wing transformed solar panels (Seeker+ Science Channel) (for all ages)

Be amazed at this environmental engineering project from Precious Plastic that transforms plastic waste into valuable products. (for all ages)

Build a water filter with NASA using materials around your home. You’ll follow the same design process used by engineers and scientists for the International Space Station orbiting Earth (NASA JPL, for ages 10+)

ACT + SHARE

Flex your engineering muscles with some building exercises. Construct a bridge out of glue and toothpicks or pencils and elastics and compete with your siblings and friends to see whose creation can carry the most weight. (for ages 8+)

Construct a catapult with house-hold materials. How far can you shoot? How accurately? Record a video of one of your launches and share using #EarthSchool. (for ages 10+)

Engineer a way to do the impossible: drop an egg without breaking it! Use recycled materials from around your house, tape, and some iterative design. (for ages 7+)

WANT MORE?

Watch: Real-life examples of the lessons in today’s Quest in the film Dream Big Engineering Our World (IMAX). (for all ages)

Learn: Alex Gendler’s TED-Ed Lesson on how the world's longest underwater tunnel was built. (for ages 10+)

Investigate how engineers get inspiration from the environment, with Director James Cameron on his mission to the bottom of the ocean. In this video, we’ll follow an engineering process to design an underwater vehicle that can withstand extreme heat and cold. (for ages 11+)

Join a community of kid coders. Learn kid-friendly programming language Scratch and participate in the global network of free coding clubs for 9- to 13-year-olds, by programming your own animations and video games. Head over to Code Club Pro or to Code.org to begin your journey. (for ages 9-13)

Build an understanding of computer programming fundamentals with Barefoot Computing’s activities for future coders. (for ages 6-10)

Understand how sometimes in environmental engineering the solutions create new problems as this short video about the benefits and challenges of large dams is explored in this video about a dam construction project. (for ages 8+)

Resources for Parents and Educators: Learn why you should teach your kids to code with computer scientist and educator Dr. Bryson Payne. Explore additional online resources for STEM with Engineers of Tomorrow.

This Earth School Quest was created by the following incredible educators and environmental experts: Jason Switzer, SaiAnirudh Grandhi and Alison Lowndes.
We look forward to seeing your Quest in action!

Document your Quests— take photos of the experiments, activities, drawings, and writing prompts you tried— and share your journey with the Earth School team and students by using #EarthSchool. We'll feature some of your photos and stories on our social channels, hopefully encouraging others to join the cause!

Explore additional creative activities (for all ages!) from the Nature of Society and save images of your work from each Quest in Littlescribe – later you can create an original card, book, magazine or calendar to bring your adventures to life!
Watch the video and finish the Think section to complete the lesson.

Engineering is about solving problems in ways that help people. But sometimes the solutions create new problems. Can you think of an example of how solving one problem with technology (for example: moving people around the world in cars) can create other problems (emissions, accidents, economic divide). However, as one of the first Earth School lesson shows, the materials used in mobiles, particularly smartphones has caused problems.
Another example is electric cars. Though they do not use fossil fuels to be powered - the charging stations could be solar-powered - they could cause accidents as they can be quiet compared to petrol or diesel cars. This means people walking along the road or other cars could not realisethey are there, causing an accident.

With the growing population, spaces became in demand. We found ways of building tall skyscrapers to create more space for people to be able to move around and be accommodated in. We were also able to create space by reclaiming parts of the sea, filling it in with land so we could build buildings in it. This may have solved problems with space by has created problems in our ecosystem. tall buildings blocked the sunlight which plants and trees need to survive. Plants became rare in big cities which creates cathastrohic effect in our environment. Reclamation also poses big problems, as marince ecosystem and wildlife are affected. As the water level in the sea becomes higher due to the melting of the poalr caps, flooding during rainy seasons become more intense. These are just some problems we are facing which are caused by unsustainable development.

Every year, people are relocated from their lands in view of development in most developing countries.
The land of local rural people is bought by the government to make more factories, buildings, expand cities, etc. In exchange, the residents are allocated apartments in a closed environment with bare minimum facilities. They are also given jobs that are mostly of manual labour. So as a result, they lose their lands, their way of life and even their autonomy in most cases.
The buildings that are built are of poor quality, generate a ton of waste and do more harm than good.
Wouldn't it be better to empower the villagers to incorporate modern technology into their original lifestyle and build around their culture instead of trying to replace them completely..?

Yes making cars for example electrical completely isn't all that great yes it could be solar or powered by natural resources but the technology and money or material to make these cars could contain harmful elements for the body like phones and taking them apart could create the same damage over time to the people who do the labor to take them apart.

There was a time when our country practiced CNG as fuels replacement for cars but due to several safety concerns and (reasons currently unknown to me) people reverted back to traditional fuel sources.
More cars imported due to demands, more fuel consumptions, drastically increased in rates of air pollution.
Constructions of new roads, expansions of pervious existing roads require chopping down trees. Further damaging the ecosystems as consequences.

One of the examples is electronics. For instance, phones, computers, laptops. They help people to find information quickly and even work online without leaving home. On the one hand, they perform a very important function and develop our humanity, but on the other hand, electronics has a lot of disadvantages. The main is that computers and phones have harmful effects on the Earth. They consist of chemical elements that emit unhealthy substances in the environment and thus kill the planet. The other disadvantage is that electronics reduce vision and harm the psychological state of the person.

This is the best example in my opinion because the creating of weapons helped eliminate and speed up a battle or war and aiding the victor greatly but with that came much more deaths and injuries. Weapons created and huge problem not only to soldiers but to everyday citizens as they could also have a weapon in their possession and there could be crimes committed with this. Nuclear bombs made it worse because with the creating of a new device could come the destruction of the whole human population.
