Let’s Begin…
In the 1950s, as part of a campaign to expose suspected Communists,
thousands of individuals were aggressively investigated and questioned
before government panels. Named after its most notorious practitioner,
the phenomenon known as McCarthyism destroyed lives and careers. But how did this episode of political repression take off? Ellen Schrecker traces the history of McCarthyism.

Well, yes something similar could happen especially to countries whose democracies are relatively new. If history is not revised by politicians, economists and historians then the past is bound to repeat itself.
I think a comparison with the current situation in the US would be interesting. After viewing the resources in the Dig Deeper section, I was shocked by the similarities.
It´s very scary what´s happening in several countries after the elections. In my country, there is many similarities with the begining this decade. Many people are intolerant.
I think Something like this can happen again. As the current President of the USA is trying to somehow supress the minorities.
It most likely could happen with any form of opposing party because someone would always disagree so they could call the opposing person in question part of the opposing group or party that means they need evidence where McCarthyism comes in to make it so mass groups of people can be deported and other actions agaist them while still being innocent
I do, and it is already happening all around the world. The power of the voter, of the people, has been subverted by means of harsh and divisive rhetoric as well as gerrymandered congressional districts(predominantly in the United States) that force candidates to pander to their Demographic, thus being more partisan on issues that could otherwise be non-partisan.
Full discretion, I am a Libertarian, however, I feel that such behavior is bipartisan. Rather than voting on policy we the people vote on who can be the furthest left or right. This is what has given way to people like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. It is a move from democracy and populism to a contemporary sort of elitism.
Politicians have used the MVT to determine how to best pander and it has proven to be detrimental to the common man.
if mccarthyism was still around today it would be a whole different world and you'll see alots of jobs loses, people might be attempting suicide because of it etc... but what happen then it was a impact of american history all because one man tried to change the world in a bad way.
I think something similar could happen in todays world, with all the different politics and government systems around the world.
Yes, I do think it can happen again. Each year, the sides of government get more reckless. The two political parties need to keep themselves in check to keep everyone out of harm.
Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wljpYZ8wejA&t=7023s look McCarthy was correct and a hero. fbi gave him a list they new were spies but mcarthy could not say where he got it from it was classified investigation. where are the factories at now in communist hands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wljpYZ8wejA&t=7023s communist have control mcarthy is correct he has been proven right.

Something similar already happens in the world today, like in Russian elections for example, when they accuse the opposing candidate of fraud.
When I read those words, I think of our current president, Donald Trump. Thus, somthing similar to what happened in the 1950s is occuring today. President Trump is accusing a lot of Latin/Hispanic people of taking away jobs from American. He's accusing immigrants as well, and calling Mexicans criminals. All this is very similar to Mcarthyism, and it is certainly happening in present day.
Yes, because these are words that some people would Describe Donald Trump as with the way he has been acting during his presidency in his 2016 term. Some think that he is too reckless to be president as it is thought that he doesn't really think when it comes to what he does in the White House. This is happening right as there are times where President Donald Trump doesn't fully respect the media and there questions and accusing them of not knowing what they are talking about and calling them idiots.
I think it is still possible that something like this could still happen in our modern world.
Well I think that this could happen again very easily. Recents events have shown how easy it is to influence a group of people. The “danger” of the communists that was used to justify McCartyism no longer exists now. However we saw in our history that when something bothers us we prefer to eliminate it rather than confront it. This is for example what President Trump trying to do with minorities within his country.
I believe that something similar to McCarthyism could indeed happen in the world presently. Political parties today still compete for power and could utilize something similar to McCarthyism to garner greater support for their party. We still have political officials who accuse other leaders of certain things, and citizens cannot always be sure that these accusations are founded upon a firm basis and not falsified information.
Yes, I do believe something like this could happen again. Any opposing parties could accuse the other to sway public votes away from them and towards themselves.
Yes, because there are a lot of issues going on today about our president Donald Trump and immigrants.
I think something like this could happen because any person in power can change the way American society works. If someone just as outrageous, distorted, fabricated, reckless, and extreme as McCarthy comes to power, this could easily happen again.
I think a comparison with the current situations in the America would be interesting. Also after viewing the resources in the dig deeper section I was shocked by noticeing the some of the same things.
I think definitely something like this could happen with everything else already going on. It would just be a bigger mess though.
It is happening in the world today. There are many countries who are at war with themselves simply because an opposing politician has stated the other is against the main views of the population. The Central African Republic is a great example of this as its civil war has been fueled by opposing sides calling each other the antagonist in the fight.
Something like McCarthyism could possibly take place in today's world. Not only can any upcoming president make this possible, but in today's society, our generation can make McCarthyism or something similar to McCarthyism a reality, once again.
People are crazy no matter what, and people call out people for the selfish things they do, so I personally think that McCarthyism can possibly happen in today's world.
Yes, I think something very similar is happening in the world today and McCarthyism could definitely come back.
I think it did happen again like with the presidential election.
