Let’s Begin…

Stress isn’t always a bad thing; it can be handy for a burst of extra energy and focus, like when you’re playing a competitive sport or have to speak in public. But when it’s continuous, it actually begins to change your brain. Madhumita Murgia shows how chronic stress can affect brain size, its structure, and how it functions, right down to the level of your genes.

There's been a lot of research into how chronic stress changes the brain. But do you think it could be a good thing, if managed effectively? Why and in what situations?

Yes, it could be a good thing. This is because if you have a chance to use this stress to your advantage you can perform better in certain aspects. Lets say I am doing some lax and I gotta run fast to get where I need to go on the field. That stress could speed me up and help me get there fast and help me, once I get there to hit the other person as hard as I can. In that time, the stress would help me out and let me play my best. Although I must agree in most circumstances stress is a bad thing but sometimes, stress' got yo back and it der to help you out. :D :) :)

Chronic stress means being under stress for long periods of time. Considering how long periods of stressful situation could adversely change the size, structure and functions of the brain, it is difficult to say how chronic stress could be a good thing. For example, it is difficult to imagine what benefits could being in a prolonged armed conflict bring to our mental health.
Furthermore, there is a limit to what individuals can do to manage chronic stress. If the source of chronic stress lies in the environment in which we live in, no amount of management could solve the problem. Sometimes, we might have to change the environment in which we live in in order to remove the source of chronic stress.

I find chronic hard to see as a good thing, sure stress gives you the necessary boost e.g. public speaking. but chronic stress is over a long time as cheam has mentioned, and from what i heard, it seems that there is very few ways it could be a good thing. Small amounts may help you and your body prepared, but any huge amount can not be a good thing.

1. Stress is good for reacting in dangerous situations, and keeping you safe. It also gives you that extra encouragement to do well in something, for example taking an exam or performing a speech. However, chronic stress has more negative impacts than positive. Is stress worth the possibility of it becoming chronic? And the risk of your prefrontal cortex shrinking, leading to memory loss? Although stress can be good and helpful in certain times, chronic stress is more unhelpful than helpful.

Being under stress for long periods of time can be bad because it can change how the brain acts. So im not to sure how it can be good because stress is only good if it is controlled because it can be good for quick and fast acts and thinking. So I do not think Chronic stress can be good because that is being under stress for long period of times which is bad for you.

I think chronic stress changing the brain could be a good thing but only if its managed and the changes don't get extreme and out of control. I think these changes could make you eager to get a task done and it could give you the perseverance that you need to finish a task. It can also make you more motivated in a competitive sport. It can also help you if you are in a dangerous situation

Yes, I think by controlling the perspective of what stress is and perceiving it as a positive natural occurrence the brain can be changed to benefit the user. When under a lot of pressure stress can be altered as a method of building courage to overcome the struggle or task at hand. I think the trick is not to overdue it and for people to known their own personal boundaries when dealing with stress.

I think it depends on how long you have be chronically stressed and how well you really can manage it.
If it is a "perfect " world, then yes. It keeps your active and striving to meet the challenges of stress and to keep your life balanced. Your brain could keep up in away, but it you look at your brain like a computer it can handle all of theses process yet something got to give some where else or you mind will over heat in away and just shut down.
There is also the fact that is you keep it up your might become numb to the fact that your stress and push though it which can do some damages to your brain which leads to your body being out of wack, which is something that is never good.
I think do to the fact to were are still really uncovering how the brain really works and how stress effects you there is no perfect balance to chronic stress and managing it.

I think stress can be good if managed correctly. However, chronic stress over time is not good for the brain and does not change it in a positive way. If stress is managed effectively, it can increase the release of stored energy. The release of cortisol from stress is a good and natural way for the body to protect itself.

I feel as though this could be a good thing, because you can use the way stress changes your brain to enhance certain aspects of your life, such as in sports, academics, etc. Overall though, I think that the way chronic stress changes your brain is generally a bad thing, and should be avoided, even though this is typically impossible. The physiological changes associated with stress can be precursors for a number of degenerative diseases, and can lead to a small prefrontal cortex, and well as loss of short and long-term memory function.

Stress is not only a good thing, I think its a necessary thing. A moderate amount of stress helps one to develop the ability to cope with adversity, so when it occurs, they are able to be more resilient and bounce back, but, chronic stress on the other hand is never a good thing. The psychological and physiological changes made caused by persistent exposure to stress are known to negatively impacting one's well-being, so Its hard to imagine a situation where there is a positive outcome outweighing that. However I'm not sure what it would mean for chronic stress to be effectively managed so there could possibly be some benefits I am unaware of, but to me "effectively managed" and "chronic" sound contradictory. Because chronic means that one is experiencing stress persistently, wouldn't that mean it is not under control and therefore not effectively managed?

It depends on the person. However, the use of the word "chronic" makes me lean towards the idea of it not being a good thing. Chronic implies ever day stress for long periods of time, and this can be quite detrimental depending on the individuals stress response. For my sister, this would be debiliating. She experiences stress induces sickness and vomitting, and has gone to the hospital in some cases. Stress can be beneficial though in small amounts. It can help one to accomplish difficult tasks efficiently with the extra push provide by the pressure from stress. I don't believe chronic stress to be quite as beneifical, but general and average stress amounts can help some depending on the stress response for the individual.

I read the "lick your rats" article (link that was added at the end of the lesson).
We learn that "the anxious, guarded behavior of the low-nurtured rat is an advantage in an environment where food is scarce and danger is high. The low nurtured rat is more likely to keep a low profile and respond quickly to stress. In the same environment, a relaxed rat might be a little too relaxed. It may be more likely to let down its guard and be eaten by a predator."
Therefore I am wondering if low nurtured human people feel somehow "better" in an environment where danger is high because they react better and feel stronger and more powerfull than other people in such an environment...

Chronic stress affect the brain in many ways, I personally don't see it's something good. It can shrink your brain and loss of memory. If chronic stress were to be manage effectively it can help the person be more calm and have less affect on the persons brain. But in reality we all don't think the same and react to stress in the same way. There's does with a much weak mentality then others. For example if I go hiking with friends and a mountain lion appears, my friends can probably run and I might start thinking how to get out of the situation. My reaction to the stress is different the my friends, I might be able to manage it differently from them or they might be able to manage it better then me. Last chronic stress is not healthy and damages your brain.

Stress is part of our makeup and as such it is like all other functions of our bodies - purposeful. Being knowledgable about its effects and ways we can use it to our advantage makes a huge difference in how we live our lives. Recognizing that too much of anything is not a sustainable condition, we can tune ourselves in to understanding when the factors of stress are working against our good health and happiness - thereby triggering mechanisms to manage the stress and turn ourselves in a positive, responsive condition.

In my opinion, stress is good but if the organism is not in an excessive situation, stress can sometimes be useful. When the person is in a situation of risk, it is precisely this tension that activates a series of mechanisms in the body that allows it to react to face what it perceives as dangerous and not remain paralyzed. Stress generates an explosion of hormones in the body, which is released so that the person can handle threats or events that cause a lot of pressure.

Stress can definitely be a good thing, especially when performing a task like having to score a goal for the win in the last few minutes of a soccer game. However, chronic stress is when one experiences more stress than what is helpful in such situations, and it can definitely cause negative effects on the brain. Although, it can be helpful when you choose to view stress as something positive, in this way, you can improve your health and your connections to other people according to Kelly Mcgongial's Ted Talk, "How to make stress your friend,".

Yes, I believe stress can be a good thing sometimes. Chronic stress is caused by stress for a long time so of course it's going to change the brain. Just having regular stress can be a good thing because you are aware/focus of your surroundings. Another example is stress can be an advantage when you're playing a sport or exercising due to trying to relief that stress.

I do not feel that stress is good because if one as a person does not know how to handle it effectively or know in what situations to apply it, he would be stressed more to the point of reaching a chronic stress that is very harmful. Linguamarina channel.

I think that stress can affect the health of a person at the time, no, but the body does not hold much but in turn being in that state of tension could help us to accelerate the work that we are doing and we do not demand more from ourselves

yes, absolutely. Stress could encourage you to act on the topic you're stressed on in order to avoid conflict/trouble. for example: you might be stressed over grades locking and you having missing assignments. you might also be stressed over your mom getting angry at you over the grades. so that stress could encourage you to push yourself to do the assignments in order to avoid the situation that is coming

At a certain point stress can help us if it constant in similar situations. In this way, we could learn how to overcome them. For example: the fear of learning how to drive or learning something new in general.
