The Mechanics of Sewing When You're Nine
Lesson created by Andy Robertson using
Video from FamilyGamerTV YouTube Channel
This is my video to help other nine year olds (girls and boys) get started using sewing machines. It's good to be able to make your own cloths and bags and things. It's cheaper and also you find out how much work has been done on the clothes you buy in shops.
Pick an item of clothing you have recently got from a shop, have a look at how it was made. Look at all the different bits of material and how they are sewn together. Also look at the label to see where it was made, and how you should look after it.
There are quite a lot of pages on the Internet about starting to sew. Although these often have a lot of words and not enough pictures, they do have lots of useful information. I like to print these out and read them through. I write down the best tips in my sewing book.
Think about the work that goes into your clothing. You don't always buy ready-meals, so maybe you shouldn't always buy ready-clothes either...
