Why do you think your sense of smell is affected when you are sick?

Why do you think everyone does not smell the same thing?
Your sense of smell is unique and complex in many ways. The world around you would not be the same without your nose. Even food would taste plain. In many ways your nose should not be taken for granted. Sometimes you can get a glimpse of this when you're sick with a bad cold and your nose can't smell the same so everything tastes different and even a little gross. This is all dependent on your nose. Taste buds do help though. They can decide whether food is sweet, salty, sour, bitter, or savory. All in all, next time you remember your grandma's special holiday cooking just by the smell of someone baking, you can thank your nose and taste buds.
