The idea of collocations is very natural to someone who grew up speaking English. Knowing that two or sometime three words just go together is simple. Even if one is using correct grammar this is a way a native speaker can tell that someone else is not a native speaker. If a speaker is using "funny" combinations of words that just do not sound right the native speaker will hear this. Even if the grammar is correct, the acceptance of a phrase may just not be accepted by a native speaker. So if your desire is to sound more natural and fluent practice collocations.
