The human body is designed for movement, and our skeleton includes 360 joints. More than 250 of those joints are able to move in more than one direction. This unique structure gives the human body the ability to perform a wide variety of movements. If sitting is that bad then how bad is laying in bed for all day and night ?

Depends on who you're laying, but yeah, as a full time occupation it runs you good odds for both STDs and violence.

The 'Sitting Disease', is well documented. I don't think Kaiser Med. Insurance Co.would spend tons of money to provide adjustable desks so their employees could stand for portions of their day if they thought it really didn't matter, in terms of both employee health and productivity. http://www.juststand.org/tabid/674/language/en-US/default.aspx?gclid=CIiP3NH79ccCFUWRfgodzj4OzA is very informative, along with Wikipedia, any WWW lookup should bring you to numerous quality sites.
**Deborah, this might sound ridiculous but one of your major risks is osteoporosis. I had to lie flat for 2 months while my pelvis came back together after having broken it completely in half (Malgaigne fracture) where your hips are disconnected from each other. There is no quick fix, just stare at the ceiling for weeks. NASA concern about astronauts time in 0 gravity periods as tests have shown decrease in bone density. they are provided with resistance exercise equipment to counteract this.

I don't get to spend time in any position - I can't sit for prolonged periods, standing is a pain, and as for laying down in bed, if I'm lucky I can go 2-3 hours before the pain wakes me up and the cycle starts all over again - sit, stand, lay down, and so on. I've got discs that are almost rubbing together, stenosis, some curvature ... and it's been declared "permanent and irreversible" by my neurologist. Then again, I'm in my 60s, so at least it's been a good run before growing old decided to come out and play.

I'm lucky in that when I was looking for a bed last year I ended up with one where I can raise the head and my legs and possibly enjoy a massage. I am only 50 and waiting to see if I am going to be operated on. It only took them a decade to diagnose! I was previously told it was fibromyalgia which just didn't ring true.

*** Deborah, my oldest daughter has the same problem, 46yr old but to a much lesser degree than yours. She can walk, cant pick up anything more than a couple of pounds. The last time she saw her Ortho he told her there was a new method to repair but suggested she not do it at this time as he felt it would be in her interest to wait a few months until its proven. Some of the other Ortho Surgeons were trying now, wants to wait and seee the real world results is a new procedure. If I find out what it's called will write you back. Unfortunately the other problem she has is reactions to almost all Rx pain meds, thankfully I can take all of them, from Naproxen to Morphine.

Did the whole list of meds that replace the pain with a side effect or two that's worse then what it's supposed to treat, the visit to the neurosurgeon who didn't think I was ready for any surgical procedure yet (I respect this guy and, when I am a candidate for his services, I will go to him because he demonstrated that he's not after a quick buck).
And then there's "pain management" - and boy, did they manage to be a pain. After going through a series of "diagnostic" injections, as well as RF Ablation, I didn't feel any better by 11 pm the day they did it. About every two months they did a gas chromotography "drug screen" urinalysis because they can bill Medicare for the full amount ($1,200+) - and when I said I was done with their games, they pulled out their bag o' excuses (maybe you should lose some weight, walk more, etc.) - yeah, they couldn't help my neck and back, but it was my fault.
My friends, I sympathize with your struggle against pain - been there, doing that.

A new study has come out that debunked this. The commentators mentioned the fact that many schools (obviously not public) had done away with all chair/desk scenarios and were going for stand up desks and alternative sitting. So....who do you believe and who do you disbelieve?

It's a good thing they didn't have stand-up desks when I was going to school - from the first day, I'd get up there and start off with "Two guys walk into a bar..." and go into a 20-minute set. What are they gonna do - send me to the principal's office? When I get there, I'll do an encore:
"What is it with English and all those rules? Rules with exceptions for all of them? Yeah, they'll tell you 'i before e, except after c,' but how about words like 'science', 'ancient', 'species', 'sufficient' - there's like 923 exceptions!"
What are they going to do? Send me home for punching a hole in a stupid rule?
By the end of the week, they'd scrap the stand-up desks for firewood and we'd have our old desks back.
